CBT & Psychology

Counselling and clinical psychologists have a degree in psychology and afterwards at least three years of post-graduate training including a Masters, Post-Graduate Practitioner Diplomas or Doctorates, and a completion of a minimum of 400 hours of supervised client contact.

Most psychologists will tend to use cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) as either their main model or one of their main models of therapy to work from. As such CBT is the most common form of psychological therapy in the NHS today.

CBT is a very goal-focused approach and is very useful in addressing conditions relating to self-image, self-confidence and self-belief. It assumes that thoughts affect feelings which in turn affect behaviour. For instance, an individual may have a 'core' belief such as 'in order to be liked I have to be successful'. This will lead to feelings of inadequacy and fears of rejection. The individual will then be caught up in patterns of behaviour aimed at being liked in all situations by all people.

A CBT therepeutic approach to this would typically involve monitoring the negative thoughts which allows the individual to identify and clarify them. The individual is then taught how to apply rational challenges to the negative thoughts and break the pattern of thoughts. This in turn will change the behaviour.

 Asides from CBT, psychologists will also have trained in some additional therapeutic approaches such as:

* systemic therapy
* schema therapy
* psychodynamic counselling
* interpersonal therapy
* person-centred approaches

 Some of our psychologists have further training in Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), which has proved very effective with the treatment of depression and anxiety.

Psychologists will either have a preference for one main approach and occasionally switch to another approach if appropriate, or they may form their own electic mix of approaches.

Therapists trained in CBT: All psychologists will have received training in CBT as part of their course requirements. All our psychologists are chartered.
