Depression is characterised by low mood; a withdrawing and shutting down of the person; lethargy; lack of energy, inspiration and motivation; abnormal sleep patters (either too much sleep or broken and interrupted sleep) and ruminating thoughts mostly centred on guilt, sadness or anger.
There are different types of depression caused by different factors. Sometimes depression can be caused by unprocessed feelings or traumas from the past. Untreated anxiety itself often leads to depression as the system becomes depleted from the constant emotional arousal of underlying anxiety, and it shuts down to protect itself. Sometimes depression can be brought about by low self-esteem and constant self-criticism. Depression can also be existential in origin, in that someone may have a good job and home life but feel down as if something is missing, or that they lack meaning and purpose in some way.
Therapies for Depression: - all therapists will work with depression.
Depending on the kind of depression involved, different therapies may be more relevant or appropriate. For instance, depression from an existential angst would be best treated with philosophical or existential counselling rather.
