Nail biting tends to develop in two forms.
The first is as a simple coping mechanism for anxiety by providing a distraction for the mind to focus on. Since the problems generating the anxiety do not go away by nail biting, then the individual needs to keep biiting their fingers more and more to keep getting a dose of distraction. It's like relying on a box of pills that only works for a few minutes and then having to take more and more until there are no pills lift, and then starting to chew the box the pills came in.
If the habit started in childhood then a stubborn defiance with parental interference can also be present, so the individual associates nail biting with freedom and autonomy.
Nail biting can then develop into a more serious obsessive compulsive second form which is an obsession with keeping the nails even or short for their own sake.
Nail biting can also be a displacement for other feelings such as anger.
Nail biting can be treated with one or more sessions of NLP/clinical hypnosis, depending on which variant of nail biting is present.
